Researchers at the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine examined the genetic evolution of the HSV-1 and HSV-2 viruses. They determined that HSV-1 has been around much longer of the two, infecting humanoids as long as 6 million years ago, and HSV-2 apparently crossed from primates about 1.6 million years ago.

The full article and findings can be read in the June 10, 2014 issue of Molecular Biology and Evolution.
